Environmental Sustainability

When most people think of sustainability, they think of environmental sustainability first—the need to protect, preserve and sustain the planet and the enormous diversity of plant and animal life around us. Working locally can greatly decrease environmental impacts in the areas of energy, transportation and materials use, and it can also increase citizens’ understanding and awareness of complex environmental issues through exhibits, programs, and operations.

The environmental impact of working locally is about more than just the degree to which the impact of transportation of materials causes pollution. The impacts cover the entire institution, and its policies regarding food service, food sourcing for events, reuse, ordering supplies and materials in bulk, teaching sustainable farming practices, repurposing materials and objects, collaborating with local community members, schools and businesses.
